Maintenance for the systems you already own

Installations are sold on day-one performance and judged on year-five performance. Solar arrays lose output to soiling, failed optimisers and inverter faults nobody noticed. Batteries drift out of schedule. Alarm detectors and CCTV cameras degrade quietly. Consumer units develop loose terminations. None of it announces itself.

Pro-Detect maintains solar PV and battery systems, electrical installations, fire alarms, intruder alarms and CCTV, for systems we installed and for systems we inherited from companies that are no longer around or no longer interested.

The starting point for any inherited system is an assessment: what is actually installed, what still works, what is at end of life and what needs correcting now. You get that honestly, including when the answer is that nothing needs doing yet.

Who it is for

  • Solar owners whose generation figures have quietly declined.
  • Landlords and letting agents with inspection and detection obligations.
  • Businesses that cannot afford unplanned downtime.
  • Anyone whose original installer has stopped answering the phone.

When it is needed

  • Output, alerts or app data that no longer look right.
  • An alarm or fire panel showing a fault, or a system never serviced.
  • An inspection report with coded items needing remedial work.
  • A property purchase, sale or letting where systems need verifying.

What deferred maintenance actually costs

A solar array losing a modest percentage of output to a failed component costs money every single day, invisibly, because nobody compares this July with last July. By the time the shortfall is obvious, several seasons of generation have gone.

Electrical faults escalate physically. A loose termination heats, the heat degrades insulation, the degraded insulation increases leakage, and the eventual outcome is a nuisance trip at best and a fire at worst. Thermal deterioration is one of the few faults that genuinely gets worse on its own.

For fire and security systems the cost is different but sharper. An unmaintained fire panel with no records is very hard to defend after an incident; an intruder alarm with flat wireless batteries protects nothing while looking like it does. Both are usually cheap to keep right and expensive to be wrong about.

Mistakes we see most often

  • Assuming an inverter fault will show up as a total shutdown rather than reduced output.
  • Ignoring panel fault lights because the sounders are silent.
  • Skipping periodic checks on rented property until an inspection is due.
  • Cleaning panels with abrasives or pressure washers and damaging the surface.
  • Waiting for total failure on a system that would have been repairable earlier.

How the work runs, step by step

The same sequence every time, so you always know what happens next and who is doing it.

1

System assessment

We establish what is installed, how it is performing and what its history is, particularly for systems we did not fit.

2

Inspection and testing

Physical inspection, electrical testing, performance comparison against expected output and functional testing of detection devices.

3

Report and priorities

You get a plain list of what is urgent, what should be planned and what is fine, with prices, in writing.

4

Remedial work

Repairs and replacements carried out to BS 7671 and to manufacturer requirements, with parts specified rather than improvised.

5

Ongoing schedule

An agreed visit cycle so systems are checked before they fail, with 24/7 response if something goes wrong between visits.

What you get out of it

Recovered output

Solar faults found and fixed convert directly into generation you are currently losing.

Fewer emergencies

Planned inspection catches degradation while it is still a small job.

Documented compliance

Test results and service records for insurers, tenants, buyers and inspections.

Any installer's system

We take on installations fitted by other companies, including ones no longer trading.

24/7 response

Faults do not keep office hours; we are contactable 365 days a year.

One contractor, all systems

Solar, battery, electrical, fire, security and CCTV covered in a single visit.

Electrical & Solar Maintenance in detail

Solar PV servicing

A solar service covers visual inspection of modules and mounting, checking of fixings and roof penetrations, inspection of DC and AC isolators and enclosures, testing of string voltages and insulation resistance, verification of earthing, review of inverter fault logs and comparison of actual generation with expected output for the site and season.

Soiling matters more than people expect on low-pitch roofs and near trees, farms and busy roads, where dust and bird fouling build faster than rain can clear them. Cleaning is done with appropriate methods: never abrasives or high pressure, which damage the module surface and the seals.

Optimiser and module-level faults are the ones most likely to be missed, because the array keeps producing. Panel-level monitoring, where fitted, makes them visible immediately.

Battery storage servicing

Battery maintenance is about connections, protection, firmware, thermal environment and schedule. Terminations are checked, protective devices verified, firmware brought current and charge and discharge behaviour compared with expected performance.

Schedules also drift out of relevance. If you have switched tariff, added an EV or changed your working pattern since the battery was commissioned, the charge windows set on day one are probably costing you money now. Reviewing them is part of the visit.

Electrical inspection and remedial work

Periodic inspection and testing establishes the condition of a fixed installation and codes faults by severity. Rented property is inspected on a defined cycle; commercial premises are inspected according to use and environment.

We carry out inspections and we complete remedial work on reports produced by other inspectors. Where a coded item is vaguely described, we test to establish what it refers to before quoting; nobody should be paying for undefined work.

Fire, security and CCTV servicing

Fire alarm servicing covers the panel, batteries, every detector and call point, sounder audibility and cause-and-effect, recorded in the log book with defects and recommendations noted.

Intruder alarm servicing covers panel and battery condition, detector walk-testing, wireless device battery and signal status, sounder operation and the notification path to your phone or keyholders.

CCTV servicing covers camera cleaning and re-aiming, focus, night-time performance, recorder health, storage and retention, firmware and password hygiene, plus a genuine playback and export test: the function almost nobody checks until they need it.

Planned maintenance for commercial sites

For workshops, units, shops and offices the economics are simple: unplanned downtime costs more than planned attendance. A scheduled visit cycle covering electrical testing, fire and security servicing and solar performance keeps everything on one calendar and one contractor.

Visits can be scheduled outside trading hours because we work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, so testing that requires isolation does not have to close you for a morning.

Electrical & Solar Maintenance: your questions answered

How often should solar panels be serviced?

Periodically, with monitoring reviewed more often. Sites near trees, farms or busy roads soil faster and benefit from more frequent attention. We will recommend a realistic interval for your site.

Will you maintain a system another company installed?

Yes. We take on inherited installations regularly, starting with an assessment of what is actually there.

How do I know if my solar array is underperforming?

Compare current generation against the same period in previous years and against expected output for your site. If the data is unclear, a service visit will establish it by testing.

What does a maintenance visit cost?

It depends on the systems covered and site size. We quote in writing so you can compare it against a planned schedule or ad-hoc call-outs.

Do you offer maintenance contracts?

We agree a visit cycle that suits the property and its systems rather than selling a fixed package.

Can you attend faults outside working hours?

Yes: 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Do you provide records for insurers and inspections?

Yes. Test results, service records and log book entries are completed and left with you.

Can you clean solar panels?

Yes, using methods appropriate to the module surface. Abrasives and high-pressure washing damage panels and are never used.

Do you cover fire and security systems too?

Yes: fire alarms, intruder alarms and CCTV alongside electrical and solar work, in the same visit where possible.

Which areas do you cover?

Caldicot, Rogiet, Magor with Undy, Chepstow, Devauden and Catbrook, Monmouth, Abergavenny, Usk, Newport and Bristol.
