What happens when electrical faults are left alone
Electrical faults do not stabilise. A loose connection generates heat, heat degrades insulation, degraded insulation increases leakage, and leakage eventually causes either a nuisance trip or a fire. The sequence is slow enough that people learn to live with the early symptoms.
The warning signs are consistent: warm or discoloured accessories, a smell of hot plastic, breakers that trip when it rains, lights that dim when the kettle boils. Each of those is a measurable fault with a cause, not a quirk of an old house.

Consumer units and circuit protection
A modern board provides RCD or RCBO protection per circuit, surge protection where appropriate, and a metal enclosure. The advantage of RCBOs over a split-load board is isolation of faults: one circuit trips, the rest of the house keeps running, and diagnosis is immediate rather than a process of elimination in the dark.
A board change is never only a board change. Earthing arrangement, main protective bonding to gas and water, the condition of existing circuit cabling and the incoming supply all have to be verified first, because a new board on an unsound installation simply reveals faults that were previously being masked.
Rewires, partial rewires and new circuits
A full rewire replaces circuit cabling throughout and is the right answer for properties with rubber or fabric-insulated cable, no earth on lighting circuits, or decades of undocumented additions. It is disruptive, and it is planned room by room so you keep power and heat where possible while it happens.
Many houses need less than that. A partial rewire replaces the circuits that are actually at end of life (often the lighting or an old kitchen ring) and leaves sound circuits alone. The survey is what separates the two, and it is free.
New circuits for kitchens, bathrooms, extensions, garden offices, workshops and outbuildings are designed around load, cable route, protection and the capacity of the existing supply, not simply spurred off whatever is nearest.
Inspection, testing and reports
An Electrical Installation Condition Report records the state of a fixed installation and codes faults by severity: C1 for danger present, C2 for potentially dangerous, C3 for improvement recommended, and FI where further investigation is needed. Rented property is inspected on a defined cycle; owner-occupied property is usually assessed periodically or at sale.
We carry out inspections and we also put right coded faults from other people's reports. Where a report is vague, we will test to establish what the code actually relates to before quoting remedial work; nobody should be paying to fix an undefined item.
Lighting, sockets and outdoor electrics
Interior lighting design covers circuit layout, switching arrangement, dimming compatibility and the reality that LED loads behave differently from the filament loads older circuits were designed around. Retrofitting LEDs onto old dimmers is a common cause of flicker and buzz with a straightforward fix.
Outdoor work (garden lighting, garage and outbuilding supplies, hot tub circuits, external sockets) needs correctly rated equipment, buried armoured cable at proper depth, RCD protection and weatherproof terminations. It is the area where DIY and general-trade work most often falls short and where wet Welsh winters find every weakness.
