Why remote quotes cost more than they save

What we check on a solar or battery survey
Roof pitch, orientation, dimensions and covering; rafter size, spacing and condition; ridge, eaves and verge detail; shading from chimneys, dormers, trees and neighbouring buildings across the day; loft access and space for cable runs and inverter siting.
On the electrical side: consumer unit type, age and spare ways, earthing arrangement, main protective bonding, meter position and the practical route from array to inverter to board. Your annual consumption in kWh and your daily usage pattern shape the sizing.
For battery storage we add the available mounting locations, ventilation, ambient temperature, existing inverter compatibility and your tariff, because charge scheduling is worth as much as capacity.
What we check on an electrical or EV survey
The condition and rating of the existing installation, main fuse rating, available capacity, the state of circuit cabling, earthing and bonding, and any visible defects that will need correcting regardless of the work you are asking about.
For an EV charger we also record parking position, cable route, wall construction, exterior exposure and whether load management is needed to keep the main fuse safe.
What we check on a fire, security or CCTV survey
For fire detection: building layout, storeys, occupancy, escape routes, risk rooms, any existing system and any fire risk assessment actions outstanding.
For intruder alarms: entry points, dead ground, internal movement patterns, pets, how you use the property in the evening and whether part-setting is needed.
For CCTV: access routes and pinch points, the views that need identification-grade detail, night lighting conditions, cable routes and how long footage needs to be retained.
How to compare the quotes you receive
Look for the module and inverter or panel and detector makes and models, not just quantities. Check whether scaffolding, making good, electrical remedial work and certification are included. Check whether the design leaves room for a battery, a second EV point or extra detection later.
Ask who is installing. A quote from a sales organisation and a quote from the installer are different products even when the equipment list matches, because accountability after handover is part of what you are buying.
